As the last of the harvest is gathered in, we pause to think how thankful we are for the food on our table when so many around the world still go hungry. Perhaps this year, more than most, we see just how much we have come to take such food for granted, as we see shortages on shelves due to Covid and Brexit.
So how do we celebrate the Harvest in Hilderstone? Each year, we hold a Harvest Festival at Christ Church, where we give thanks for the harvest and those who work the land. This holds special significance to our small rural community, where farming is an integral part of our everyday lives. We ask our local community to donate fresh, tinned or dried food, or flowers/plants with which to decorate the church. This produce is then taken to the Village Hall ready for our annual Harvest Supper, at which all the produce and flowers are auctioned off for charity.
We hope you can join us for this important festival and maybe even make a donation for the event. Details below:
Thursday 16th September Closing date for sale of Harvest Supper tickets. This is a ticketed event only. Please contact Phil Davies for tickets – Tel: 01785 747836.
Friday 17th September The church will be open for villagers to leave any donations. Tinned food, pasta, rice, vegetables, fruit, preserves and flowers all welcome.
If anyone can provide gifts for the Raffle, they would also be much appreciated and can be left in church on either the Friday or Saturday.
Saturday 18th September 9-11am – donations received at church.
10-12pm – decorate the church. We have a great deal of fun decorating the church and would welcome anyone wishing to join us in displaying all the produce ready for Sunday.
Anyone wishing to make a donation outside of these hours, please contact Audrey Stringer. Tel: 01889 505638.
Sunday 19th September 11.15am – Harvest Festival. You are welcome to bring any donation you wish to the service itself if this is easier for you.
Monday 20th September 7pm for 7.30pm Harvest Supper. Pie and Pea supper, followed by a Raffle and the auction of the Harvest produce. Hazel Woodward will be our Auctioneer
